Energy on the Horizon for Anglesey primary schools

Horizon Nuclear Power is holding educational sessions at local primary schools to inspire young people to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The visits to primary schools on Anglesey are part of Horizon’s Futures programme, aimed at introducing the next generation to a career in the energy sector by exploring STEM subjects and the skills and opportunities they can offer.

Horizon is running the sessions with Bangor University’s Widening Access team, which aims to reach children at a young age in order to raise aspirations and open doors to higher and further education. The Futures programme has been developed in line with the curriculum and with input from teachers.  It includes a range of activities focused on the science behind low-carbon energy including nuclear.

Claire Burgess, Education Programme Co-ordinator at Horizon Nuclear Power, said:
“The children we’ve been to visit so far have been so enthusiastic about these key subjects. It’s wonderful that they’re already taking an interest in topics that could turn into opportunities for them later in life.

“Wylfa Newydd will bring plenty of job opportunities and, through our Futures programme, we’re aiming to raise awareness of local children and young people to enable them to capitalise on such opportunities.”
