Wylfa – About Our Site

Wylfa, on the Isle of Anglesey, is ideally situated for low carbon nuclear power production. As well as the vital infrastructure developed to support the existing station, Anglesey has a highly skilled nuclear workforce and direct access to essential seawater cooling facilities.

A new station on an existing site
The proposed site incorporates 629 acres (254 hectares) of land beside the existing operational Magnox nuclear power plant on the Wylfa Peninsula. It provides good foundation conditions for a new nuclear power station and is high above sea level to simplify the process of managing flood risks.

We aim to secure first electricity generation at Wylfa within the first half of the 2020s. This will follow extensive engagement with the local community and we expect to undertake our first phase of formal public consultation in 2014.

Major project milestones
There are several key stages in the planning process before any construction can take place. To build a new nuclear power station a Development Consent Order (DCO) application must be submitted to The Planning Inspectorate. This process involves a significant period of consultation and can take several years to complete.

Following the acquisition of Horizon Nuclear Power by Hitachi, we plan to deliver at least two Advanced Boiling Water Reactors (ABWRs) – generating a minimum of 2,600MW at Wylfa. Our development will also allow for a third unit at Wylfa, providing an additional
1,300-1,400MW of electricity to the UK.

We’re planning on the basis of site works beginning from 2015, leading to the start of major on-site work in 2018 and first nuclear construction around 2019.
