Consultation at Wylfa

OUR SITES: WYLFA

Wylfa, on the Isle of Anglesey, has a long established history of nuclear power generation and an experienced local skills base. Anglesey has big ambitions to realise its potential as a centre of low carbon generation for the future and recognises the key role that a new nuclear power station could play.

As well as vital infrastructure, including a connection to the national electricity grid, Anglesey has a highly-skilled local nuclear workforce and excellent access to direct sea water cooling facilities.

In total, the proposed development site comprises: 232 hectares of land secured by RWE npower in late 2008, along with a 3600MW Grid Connection Agreement and further land secured by the joint venture, now Horizon Nuclear Power, from the NDA and energy company EDF via an auction process in April 2009.

The land which surrounds the existing Magnox nuclear power station at Wylfa was nominated into the Government's Strategic Siting assessment in March 2009. Subsequently, the site has been included in the Government's draft nuclear National Policy Statement (NPS), which included a list of sites deemed strategically suitable for nuclear development.

The NPS process will decide upon the area's strategic suitability for a new station (though planning permission would still be required)- Further details on this process can be found on the Government's nuclear siting website. The Wylfa Peninsula provides good foundation conditions for a new nuclear station and is sufficiently high above sea level to avoid serious flood risks.

Horizon Nuclear Power has a strong commitment to working with the Government, County Council, local and national organisations and the community to deliver significant investment in a new nuclear power station for Anglesey.

Permitted ground investigation work and ecological studies are underway and further details of any new power station at Wylfa, including its likely position within the land available and the reactor design to be used, are currently being considered.

At present we are carrying out an in-depth review of the two technologies still being considered as part of the Government's ongoing Generic Design Assessment (GDA) process. More information on the technologies can be found on the Government's website.

In line with our commitment to community engagement, Horizon Nuclear Power held drop in sessions in March 2009 and public exhibitions in November 2009. Newsletters were also distributed to local residents (June 2009) and the Isle of Anglesey (October 2009) to keep people up to date on the latest developments. We will continue to engage with local people around Wylfa in 2010 and beyond and hold further formal consultation activities prior to a planning application in line with the new planning regime.

The scoping report sets out the scope of detailed studies proposed to establish the environmental impact of the project. This will result in an Environmental Statement which is an essential part of the planning application.

FAQs:

We are currently in the process of developing a Wylfa website in order to provide all stakeholders and members of the community with detailed information on our development plans. We anticipate that the site will go live in Spring 2010.
