Horizon invites local community to help it uncover the secrets of the past

Budding archaeologists across Anglesey and North Wales are being invited to help uncover the secrets hidden in the soil around Horizon’s Wylfa Newydd site.
As part of its comprehensive archaeological investigations, Horizon is inviting members of the public to get involved in a community dig at the site. Volunteers will help Horizon uncover the past and record the fascinating historical information they find.
The work will take place this summer as Horizon undertakes more investigations following last year’s site-wide archaeological evaluations. This will help gain a better understanding of the discoveries from the earlier works.
The excavations will remove the soil from each of the investigation areas, allowing the amateur archaeologists from the community to work alongside Horizon’s specialists to reveal and record their findings. With the digs complete and the information safely recorded, Horizon will restore the land to its original condition.
Richard Foxhall, Stakeholder Relations Manager at Horizon, said: “We need to conduct more of these archaeological studies and want to offer local people the chance to help us dig, ensuring we have a complete record of the history of our corner of North Wales.
“We’ll be holding community digs throughout August and if people want to come and join us they should get in touch. We’ll provide professional guidance and all the equipment, so you just need to bring your natural curiosity and a willingness to get your hands dirty!”
In addition to the community dig, Horizon will be organising a series of talks across the island later this year – outlining the archaeological studies that have taken place and discussing its findings. Members of the Horizon team will also be visiting local schools over the coming months to talk to students about the studies.
Anybody wanting to express an interest in joining the community dig should contact Horizon freephone on 0800 954 9516 or email wylfaenquiries@horizonnuclearpower.com before 26 July.
