Amlwch high street hots up thanks to Horizon

A donation from Horizon Nuclear Power has helped Cwmni Cymunedol Amlwch Cyf buy a new energy saving heating system for the Amlwch Community Shop, helping it serve the community all year round.
Cwmni Cymunedol Amlwch Cyf successfully applied for funding through Horizon’s Charitable Donations, Community Support & Sponsorship scheme earlier this year. The donation has allowed the group to replace the community shop’s existing heating system with two energy efficient air to air heat pumps – keeping the shop warm, reducing the carbon footprint and reducing running costs.

The Amlwch Community Shop, located on Queen Street, was opened by Cwmi Cymunedol Amlwch Cyf in February 2017 and is run by volunteers from the town. The shop provides a valuable resource for the local community, not only selling great products but also promoting the heritage of Amlwch. The team encourages reusing, recycling and sustainability, and is an important part of the Amlwch community.

Once fully established the shop will become 100 per cent self-sufficient with surplus funds being used to support community events and activities. It is hoped that the first donations will be distributed 1st March 2018. Working alongside Job Centre Plus and Cyfle Cymru, accredited training opportunities will be provided to volunteers so they can gain experience and build their confidence, while developing new skills which can then be transferred into the workplace.

Carli Evans-Thau, Secretary of Cwmni Cymunedol Amlwch Cyf, said: “We’re extremely grateful to Horizon for helping us improve the heating in the shop. The new heat pumps will make the building much cheaper and efficient to run, allowing us to put any extra funding towards community based activities.

“We opened the shop to try and replace the function of some businesses that have left the town over the last few years. Residents needed somewhere local to buy affordable products, so the Amlwch Community Shop provides that service, but it’s also become a popular hub for local people and tourists. It is important to remember however that there wouldn’t be a community shop without the dedicated team of volunteers and generous donors”

Delyth Owen, Community Involvement Officer at Horizon, said: “We’re happy to provide support the shop and we recognise how vital community ventures like this are to the town. We’re passionate about supporting community-focused businesses with energy and resource efficiency, and installing the new heating in the shop will help the organisation do exactly that.”
